The two main School Boards that service Barrie and the surrounding area are the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB). Both boards provide instruction in English and French. Currently the Simcoe County District School Board provides French Immersion (FI) starting in grade 1, as well as Extended French as a Second Language beginning in grade 5. This program is currently being phased out in favour of the French Immersion Program and will no longer be offered beyond the 2016 –2017 school year. The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic School Board also provides French language instruction to its students from grade 1 through 12.
Additionally, there are two French School Boards that service this area, the Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud and the Conseil scolaire Viamonde.
